SE Advising
Posted 04/30/2008
It is advising season here at MSOE and so I thought that this would be a good opportunity to share with you the advising philosophy that we have adopted within the Software Engineering program.
- Every student is assigned an academic advisor in the freshman year. The academic advisor does not change for as long as the student is in the program.
- All academic advisors are full-time faculty members and teach within the program. This means that they are really aware of the curriculum and how the various courses in the curriculum fit together. They can provide appropriate guidance in selecting a workload that is appropriate for you and help you customize your program by choosing elective courses that match your interests.
- Students must meet with their academic advisor every quarter before they can register for the next quarter. This does not mean that a student should see their advisor only once during the quarter, but it does ensure at least one meeting between the student and his/her academic advisor to discuss academic progress.
- The academic advisor typically is the first point of contact for any difficulties that you may encounter during your career here at MSOE. If they are unable to solve the problem for you, they will help you get in contact with the person who can help.
- Your academic advisor is also the person with whom you can discuss your summer plans, internship opportunities, graduate school and/or full-time opportunities, and any other interests that you may have.
