New Year Starts With a Bang

The new academic year started with a  bang on September 8, 2008. Here are some highlights that I would like to share with you.

  • We began the year amidst some great news. MSOE continues to be recognized both in the Midwest and nationally for its undergraduate engineering programs. You can read more about the rankings here.
  • We welcomed approximately 60 new students into the program and approximately 85 returning students. We have been busy in the first week, making sure that everybody is in the right classes, feels comfortable in their new surroundings and knows who to contact when they have any questions.
  • Our freshman students (who have been on the MSOE campus for about two weeks now) were asked "What do you like about being an MSOE student?". Here are some of their responses:

    • A lot of free food.
    • A lot of activities to participate in.
    • The new friends you meet.
    • Always around friendly people.
    • Campus Shuttle.
    • Being issued laptops.
    • Knowing I am getting a great education.
    • Great professors!
    • All the free stuff you get..
    • Being downtown.
    • Lot of one-on-one instructor/student interaction.
  • We also welcomed two new full-time faculty members into the program. They come to us with extensive academic and industry experience and will be great assets to the program.
  • We have been working very hard planning various events, academic, professional as well as social, for the students. The students have already received several emails from me regarding professional development days, internship and full-time opportunities, gaming competitions, professional networking groups and the annual Software Engineering Day to be held on Oct 23, 2008.
  • The demand for software engineers in the current economy continues to be strong. We are getting requests for graduates and interns almost on a daily basis. The SE bulletin board is full of opportunities and our placement office tells me that we have a record number of companies interested in Software Engineering who will be on campus for the Career Day on Oct 3, 2008.
