Gene Carter Mac Lab
Rosenberg Hall, R202

The Gene Carter Macintosh Laboratory was relocated in 2008 to Rosenberg Hall. Previously located in the lower level of MSOE’s Walter Schroeder Library, the lab replaced an aging desktop personal computer lab supported by the Rader School of Business. The move raised the profile of Macintosh computing opportunities at MSOE and rekindled student interest in this important resource.

Several hardware and software improvements were made at the time of the relocation. Funds from the Gene Carter family gift were used to upgrade to Apple Cinema Monitors for all work stations. New software was installed in the lab including Final Cut Pro and Apple Aperture. Finally, a MacBook personal notebook computer was purchased for instructor preparation. The lab includes scanner and networked, color printer.

The Gene Carter Macintosh Lab has become an important feature of Rosenberg Hall and the Rader School of Business. A new business course was created in 2008 entitled Fundamentals of Multimedia Production for Business. The course expands students’ knowledge of multimedia as a business tool and strategy. It also builds their computing skills to include Apple software and hardware. Class rosters reveal students from engineering, business and technical communications programs have enrolled during the past two years.

In addition to the integration of the lab into the business curriculum, Apple technologies continue to be featured in the Technical Communication (TC) program. Courses in Web site design, multimedia graphics, and visual design techniques are courses that enroll TC majors and also attract business, management information systems and engineering majors.

Integration of the Gene Carter Macintosh Laboratory into more courses and programs is a strategic initiative for the Rader School of Business and other programs at MSOE. The opportunity to have the lab positioned in a high profile location has been instrumental in realizing this goal. Continued efforts are fueled by great enthusiasm and creativity. They move forward deliberately as resources are available.
