MSOE Athletic teams shine in the classroom

The MSOE Raiders varsity athletic programs not only excel on the athletic field, but in the classroom. Four programs recently received recognition for being among the brightest in the nation in their respective sport.

Soccer Cooks up All-Academic Honors
The MSOE men’s soccer team, led by Head Coach Jimmy Banks, was recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), being named an All–Academic team for 2007. The NSCAA acknowledges college soccer programs that carry at least a 3.00 team grade point average (GPA). The MSOE Raiders’ senior captain Spencer Cook also grabbed national attention being chosen as an Academic All-American, selected by the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSida).

Wrestlers receive awards in the classroom
For the eighth straight year, the National Wrestling Coaches Association recognizes the MSOE wrestling team as one of the top academic teams in the nation. After four consecutive years prior to 2007 of being number one in the nation, the Raider grapplers held a 3.118 grade point average (GPA), finishing among the smartest Division III programs this year. Joel VandeBoom, a junior architectural engineering major, wrestling at 157 pounds, was named All- American for carrying a 3.99 grade point average. VandeBoom is the 18th wrestler in the school’s history to receive this award.

Men’s and women’s cross country run away with Academic Awards
The MSOE men’s and women’s cross country team not only left their mark in the Northern Athletic Conference Championships this year, but ran away with National All-Academic honors, as announced by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The men’s team, led by head coach Larry Gardner, won their eleventh consecutive conference title and was also chosen as an NCAA Division III All-Academic team with a 3.18 GPA. The women, who finished third in the NAC, have a combined 3.26 GPA for the 2007 season.
