Women's Basketball, Cayo, blocks their way to the top

The MSOE Raiders women's basketball team may not be the defending Northern Athletic Conference champions, but they are leaving their mark as defenders among the conference contenders. As of Jan. 18, the Raiders ranked 12th in the nation in blocked shots, averaging 5.3 blocks per game.

Head Coach Jessica Ott is pleased with the Raiders defensive effort. "We are playing really good team defense. They trust each other and have each other's back."

Freshman Forward Carol Cayo (Lake Mills, Wis./ Lake Mills HS) is one of the reasons that the Raiders are strong around the cylinder. Cayo ranks tenth in the nation in blocked shots, averaging 3.6 per game and is 26th in the nation in rebounding, averaging 11.5 boards per game.

Look for Cayo's rebounds to go up as she had a school record 21 rebounds on Wednesday, January 21, leading MSOE to a 58-38 victory over the Concordia-Chicago Cougars.

"Cayo is a tough defender," said Ott. "She seems to get her hands on everything; offensively, defensively, steals; she gets our defense going. She has knack for blocking shots. Carol (Cayo) is fun to watch. Our team is fun to watch."

Coach Ott and the Raiders take to the court Saturday, Jan. 24 against Lakeland College in a tough NAC contest. Tipoff is 6:00 p.m.
