MSOE sophomore Elias Macias Simeon will take part in the 24th PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship this weekend in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The event takes place at the PGA Golf Club on the Ryder and Wanamaker Courses from Friday, May 7 until Sunday, May 9. The tournament will consist of three 18-hole rounds of stroke play over the weekend.
Macias Simeon carded a 74 in the second round of the MSOE Invitational last October to finish second overall in that event. Last month, he shot a 75 in the Northern Athletics Conference Spring Automatic Qualifier Meet. The industrial engineering major is a native of Mexico City, Mexico.
The event's field will include nearly 200 athletes from minority-serving institutions and minority students from any college or university. The goal of this event was to elevate the game of golf in minority colleges and universities by giving them a chance to compete in a championship because of being denied opportunities to compete in NCAA Collegiate Golf events.
The first Championship was conducted in the spring of 1987 at Highland Park Golf Course in Cleveland, Ohio. Since 1998, the PGA Golf Club has been host to the Championship. The debut broadcast of the 2010 highlight show on Golf Channel will air on Wednesday, July 7 at 7 p.m. Additional air times are Wednesday July 28 at 9 a.m., and Saturday, July 31 at 2:30 a.m.
