June 15, 2010 - Colorado Springs, Colo. - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced that MSOE's Brian Gibboney was selected as the NCAA Division III Sports Information Director Midwest Region Honoree for the Grant Burger Media Award.
Gibboney, the MSOE Sports Information Director (SID) and head men's volleyball coach was one of three Division III SID's selected in the men's volleyball category. This is his fifth consecutive year to receive this honor.
Within the past year, Gibboney has written articles for the AVCA publication Volleyball Ace Power Tips, emphasizing drills that can be used by coaches to enhance their practices. He is also responsible for media releases for the men's and woman's volleyball program among the 22 varsity programs at MSOE.
Gibboney is also the head coach of the men's volleyball program where he led the team to a tenth place ranking among NCAA Division III institutions. The Raiders had a team record 17-win season in 2010 and lost only four matches against division III opponents. Victories on the year included wins over national power NYU, ninth ranked MIT in Boston, at the MIT tournament and downing eighth ranked Carthage twice as the Raiders went on to win the Midwest-III Conference Title.
"Brian is very deserving of this award, not only for the tireless hours he puts in for sports information, but also for coaching." said Athletic Director Dan Harris. "He deserves this award not only for what he does for volleyball, but for what he does for all sports at MSOE."
The AVCA selects national winners for the Grant Burger Media Award in four different categories; Broadcast Print, Web and Sports Information/Athletic Communications. Further, the finalists for the Sports Information/Athletic Communications category came from region winners in each of the NCAA divisions.
