Among an 18-team field, the Raiders surpassed some very solid competition to place second at the Cress Creek Collegiate Invite Monday in Naperville, Ill. Illinois Wesleyan, a Midwestern golf powerhouse, won the event with a 597 score, followed closely by MSOE who finished just seven strokes off the pace. Rounding out the top five teams was Carthage (612), Wheaton (616) and North Park (621).
Individually for the Raiders, junior Dane Zachman had an outstanding meet as he tied for third place overall with a 36-hole score of 147. MSOE had four scorers place in the top twenty at the event. Following Zachman was seniors Ben Turk (T-6, 150) and Peter Eich (T-11, 154) and freshmen Drew Liner (T-19, 156) and Scott Loftus (T-28, 158).
"We haven't played this well in two years, since we went to the national championship (in 2009)," said head coach Joe Meloy. "We had excellent contributions by our two freshman, Drew and Scott. I always expect very good play from returning veterans Peter, Ben and Dane to keep us competitive."
With their highest finish on the season, MSOE led all NAC teams at the event. The Raiders look to continue their success heading into the prestigious Frank Wrigglesworth Invite Sunday, Sept. 26, in Eau Claire, Wis.
