Top Ten MSOE Sports Stories of 2010-2011
Here is the list of the top ten sports stories compiled by the MSOE Athletic Department:
1. MSOE announces plans to build parking structure/athletic field
The announcement of MSOE planning to build an athletic field and parking structure across from the Kern Center tops this year's list. The new athletic field is projected to host home events for varsity soccer and lacrosse as well as intramurals and club sports while also providing much needed parking to the MSOE community and downtown businesses.
2. Men's Golf returns to the NCAA Tournament
Despite finishing a distant second place in the fall season, the MSOE men's golf team made a miraculous comeback during the Northern Athletic Conference (NAC) spring qualifier to win the tournament and return to the NCAA Men's Golf Championship. They are the first team in MSOE history to make a second appearance at an NCAA championship event. MSOE made their first trip in 2009. The Raiders placed 25th at NCAA Championship.
3. Men's Track and Field wins conference twice in the same year
The MSOE men's track teams made their presence known by winning the NAC indoor track and field championships, but also duplicating the feat, winning the outdoor title as well. During the Indoor season, the Raiders finished the Championship with a total of 143 points, besting second place Aurora who had 121 points in second place. To win the outdoor title, MSOE outdistanced runner-up Aurora University by 27.50 points.
4. Hockey nationally ranked for 16 straight weeks
The MSOE hockey team was nationally ranked for 16 straights week as they finished 14th in the country. When they were ranked eighth in the nation on February 14, the Raiders became the highest nationally ranked team in the school's history. Completing the season with a 16-3-1 record in the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA) and 21-6-1 overall record, the Raiders had the second best record in the MCHA behind NCAA runner-up Adrian.
5. Austin Meier-ed in honors
MSOE men's basketball senior forward Austin Meier received many accolades for his outstanding year, both on and off the basketball court. Meier was named the 2010-2011 Capital One Men's Basketball College Division Academic All-America of the Year. The award is selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performance on the floor and in the classroom. The College Division includes all colleges and universities that are NCAA Division II, Division III or NAIA institutions. Last season, Meier was selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team and repeated the achievement this past year.
Meier was also a Jostens Trophy finalist. The Josten Award is a national award created by the Rotary Club of Salem, Va., to honor the most outstanding men's and women's Division III basketball players of the year. Among other awards, Meier was named the NAC Player of the Year, First Team All-NAC and was chosen to play in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-Star game. He was also honored by D3Hoops.com, Inside Wisconsin Sports and other organizations for his outstanding play.
6. Men's Basketball finishes with their best record ever
The MSOE men's basketball team left their mark in the history books with their first 19-win season. The Raiders won two tournaments during their 2010-2011 campaign (All Engineers Classic, UW-Oshkosh Thanksgiving Classic) and were regionally ranked during the season, finishing the year 12-4 in the NAC South Division and 19-7 overall. Under the direction of Brian Miller, the Raiders have been the most successful NCAA Division III team in Wisconsin over the past five years.
7. Toomey garners Hockey All-American Second Team honors
MSOE junior goalie Connor Toomey was named to the Reebok NCAA Division III Men's Hockey All-American team. Toomey was a Second Team selection to the West squad. He joins Brian Soik (2006-2007) as the school's only other All-American in hockey. Toomey was also recognized as the 2010-2011 MCHA Player of the Year and a First Team All-MCHA selection.
8. Cayo named to Capital One Academic All America Second Team
Junior center Carol Cayo was named to the Capital One Women's Basketball College Division Academic All-America Second Team. Cayo is an industrial engineering major and holds a 3.97 grade point average. Last season, Cayo was selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team. She was also a First Team All-NAC selection.
9. Bohl, Keizer among nations leading scorers
MSOE women's soccer player Paula Bohl and hockey player Jordan Keizer were among the nation's leading scorers in their respective sports. Bohl, a freshman forward, spent much of the season ranked first or second in goals. She finished the season 13th in the nation. Keizer also was ranked first in the nation during the season and ended up second in the country with 23 goals.
10. Individual athletic and academic success round out the top ten
Diederich, Narveson and Werner represent MSOE at NCAA Championships
Track athletes Kevin Diederich and Jordan Werner along with wrestler Jake Narveson qualified and participated in the NCAA championships in their respective sports. Diederich competed at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships while teammate Werner ran in the 55-meter dash at the indoor nationals. Narveson was a wild card selection into the NCAA Wrestling Championships at 141-pounds.
Brehmer, Dieringer, Hosko chosen Academic All-District selections by CoSIDA
MSOE women's soccer senior midfielder Heidi Brehmer, women's track and field athlete junior Emily Dieringer and men's soccer junior midfielder Dan Hosko were all selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 5 teams in their respective sports. Brehmer was a Third Team selection for the second consecutive year while Dieringer and Hosko were Second Team honorees.
Other noteworthy events in 2010-2011
Wrestling has best dual season ever: The MSOE wrestling program had more success in dual matches this past season than in any other season on record. Their 9-2 record included three victories over Wisconsin state schools. The Raiders placed first in the conference regular season but fell short at the conference tournament as they finished just points behind Lakeland for the title.
MSOE Softball raises nearly $3,000 through Strikeout Cancer: In a fundraising event for the American Cancer Society, the Raiders raised $2,862 in their Strikeout Cancer Campaign. The idea was originated by MSOE catcher Lianna Campos. The Raiders joined together with the teams from Alverno and Wisconsin Lutheran to help this cause. The fundraiser was also featured Time Warner Cable Sports 32's weekly show.
Men's Basketball travels to the Dominican Republic, hosts clinic and raises awareness: From August 25-30, the Raiders played a series of exhibition games in preparation for the 2010-2011 season. Off the court, the Raiders held a basketball clinic for children of the impoverished nation. The team donated shoes, clothing and basketballs to the cause.
Athletic Director Harris, five alumni inducted into Athletic Hall of Fame: Athletic Director Dan Harris, alumni Rick Brooks (soccer, 1999-2002), Matt Kaiser (baseball, 1994-1997), Jason Kleckner (soccer, 1997-2000), Adam Lewis (basketball, 2000-2004) and Matthew Schoenherr (wrestling, 2000-2004) joined the MSOE Athletic Hall of Fame this past January in the fifth class.
Rowing had a good year sending two boats into the semifinals of the top collegiate regatta, the Dad Vail Regatta. They also won Milwaukee's Kilbourn and Juneau Cup during the 2010-2011 season.
Men's Volleyball was nationally ranked in the polls for the sixth consecutive season and placed second in regular season conference play. Starting in 2012, they begin play in the Continental Volleyball Conference, a nation-wide NCAA Division III conference with an opportunity to receive a bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.
MSOE sports leave mark in the Northern Athletics Conference|
Men's Tennis placed second at the NAC Championships, losing to Concordia-Wisconsin 5-1 in the NAC final... Men's Soccer finished in third place with an 8-3 record in the NAC and 10-9 overall. They made it to the conference semifinals before bowing out to Aurora... Women's Soccer made the NAC playoffs as the fourth seed with an 8-2-2 NAC record and carried an 11-7-2 overall record... Women's Basketball made the NAC playoffs as the eighth seed, falling in the first round to eventual champion Wisconsin Lutheran.
MSOE coaches garner recognition: Track and field coach Larry Gardner, wrestling coach Kevin Morin and hockey coach Mark Ostapina were honored for the success of their teams during the 2010-2011 season.
Gardner was recognized twice this year; being named both theNAC men's indoor track and field and outdoor track and field Coach of the Year as the program won the NAC title in both seasons. Morin was tabbed the Northern Wrestling Association's Coach of the Year as well as the Wisconsin Wrestling Coaches Association (WWCA) District #8 (College Division) Coach of the Year. Ostapina was selected as this year's MCHA Coach of the Year. He led the Raiders to a 21-6-1 overall record.
