Baseball season recap

For the first time since 1997, the MSOE baseball team had two players named all-conference. Raider seniors Mike Brunette (De Pere, Wis./West De Pere) and Michael Merk (Oakfield, Wis./Oakfield) were named to the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) First Team for the 2010 baseball season. In 1997, MSOE outfielder Nate Weber and catcher Matt Kaiser made the All-Lake Michigan Conference team.

Brunette led the Raiders with a batting average of .435, an on-base percentage of .535 and 40 RBIs. The MSOE starting catcher also hit three home runs, eight doubles and scored 29 runs. In the NAC, Brunette was third in batting average, fifth in on-base percentage and ninth in walks.

Merk hit .420 this past season with a .500 on-base percentage. The second baseman led the team with five triples, six home runs and a slugging percentage of .713. Merk had 18 doubles, 33 RBIs and 49 runs. In the NAC, he finished sixth in batting average, second in slugging percentage, eighth in on-base percentage, eighth in runs scored, fourth in hits, fourth in doubles, third in triples, fifth in home runs and second in total bases.

Also receiving conference accolades was senior pitcher Roy Turtenwald (New Berlin, Wis./New Berlin West) who was a NAC All-Sportsmanship Team selection.

Junior Emery Hull (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) was also among the top ten in the NAC in many categories. Hull was ninth in slugging percentage (.619), sixth in on-base percentage (.511), sixth in runs (51), second in doubles (19) and third in walks (30). Hull had a .399 batting average which was put him third on the Raiders.

Senior Pete Winberg (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) hit .301 on the year and was tied for fifth in the NAC for triples with four. Justin Quinn (Greenfield, Wis./Whitnall) logged a .333 batting average with a .390 on-base percentage during his freshman year with MSOE.

On the mound, senior Jake Lathers (West Bend, Wis./West Bend West) tied for fourth in the NAC with ten games started during the season. Freshman Sullivan Dee (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) had a strong season for the Raiders out of the bullpen. Sullivan logged a 2.08 ERA in17 1/3 innings pitched. He was fifth in the NAC with nine games finished.

Junior Ben Hansen (Beloit, Wis./Beloit Memorial) struck out 32 hitters in 39 1/3 innings and had a 4.58 ERA in nine appearances.

During early April, MSOE went on their best run of the season as they won eight of ten games with victories over Concordia Wisconsin, Lakeland, Lawrence and Maranatha Baptist.

The Raiders finished the season with a 12-27 overall record and a 7-15 mark in NAC play.
