Mike Ingo

Major: Construction Management

Class: 2010

Name: Mike Ingo
Major: B.S. in Construction Management
Hometown: Cary, Ill.

Why did you choose to attend MSOE?
My main reason for choosing MSOE was the high placement rates. This made me realize that companies know of MSOE’s reputation and the curriculum here. Knowing this made my decision easy and my experience at MSOE has proven my initial thoughts to be true, since I have had a summer internship every year during my time at MSOE and should have a few good full-time offers after graduation.

What do you like about the CM major?
The most beneficial aspect of the BSCM program is that all of your major-related classes are taught by professors who worked, or currently work in, the construction and engineering industries. This allows them to bring in their own personal experiences to class and relate it to the lectures. Another way to get some experience is through the Senior Design project that all AE and CM students go through.

What do you enjoy doing for fun?
MSOE is not an easy university, but it is important to have a good balance between school and personal time.  MSOE has a great location in downtown Milwaukee and has easy access to the highways to travel to the neighboring towns. I enjoy being able to get together with all of my friends and just hang out or go out for the night. I have also found that a good round of golf or a ride on the motorcycle can help clear my head for a few hours too.

What are you involved in at MSOE?
Since my freshman year at MSOE, I have been involved in many professional student organizations such as Associated General Contractors (AGC), American Institute of Constructors (AIC), National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) and American Concrete Institute (ACI). All of these professional student organizations are a great way to apply what is learned in class to the real thing and are a great opportunity to network with industry professionals. I am currently the President of NECA and have the opportunity to experience organizing job-site tours and guest speakers.

I have also been involved in some of the student competitions that MSOE participates in against other schools across the nation. I played the role of Superintendent on the Commercial Construction Team for two years and was the team captain for one of the years. I am also involved in the NECA Energy Green Challenge as an estimator.

What do you like most about MSOE so far?
I really enjoy the small class sizes at MSOE because it gives you the opportunity to have some one-on-one time with your professors during lecture. The faculty has always been very helpful and always has the best interest of the students in mind. All professors are very easy to approach, even the program director.

What do you hope to do after graduation?
After graduation, I hope to work for a large general contractor and build hospitals. I have the goal of being a LEED Professional within two years of graduation and returning for my M.B.A within ten years of graduation. I hope to start up and run my own construction company with my friends from MSOE.
