Has your MSOE education prepared you for the workforce? If so, how?
Most definently! I learned so much inside and outside of the classroom at MSOE that has really prepared me for the workforce. All the hard work, working with people, real industrial projects and leadership skills, have helped me to excel in my field. I have encountered many situations that were very simular to situations in college which has helped me deal with them in a professional way. MSOE really pushed me to be the best I could be; through successes and failures, I knew that if I could graduate from MSOE, I could handle anything.
Do you find that employers have a favorable image of MSOE graduates?
Yes! When people ask where I got my engineering degree and I mention MSOE, they know that I have an outstanding education. They always mention how smart I am, I simply reply that I'm a hard worker. MSOE has a great reputation and as an alumna, I take great pride in being able to say I graduated from this university.
What advice do you have for current or prospective MSOE students?
Get involved! Employers not only want to see you have a great education but also that you have people skills. By getting involved in the student activities, whether its the professional societies, social organizations or sports, it will really make you stand out from your peers. So don't be afraid to take on a leadership role in these activities, you will gain some great experiences.
Also, dont be afraid to ask for help and ask questions - the professors are there to help and they dont know if you truly understand so ask and they will be willing to help. It's the same in the workplace, if you don't know, ask. No matter the subject, the expert in the field is always excited to share their knowledge! Lastly, network and make connections...you never know when someone you know has an opening at their company in your field!
What are your tips for success?
Give everything your very best! Work hard and take pride in what you do. Remember, YOU shape your career.
