Main Floor of the Library

The entrance to the library is on the second floor of the library building. The entire second floor of the library is a Talking Floor. Talking, socializing, group study, and cell phone use are permitted on the entire floor. Wireless Internet and network access is also available throughout the second floor.  Physical network connections are also available in the study rooms, as well as in other areas on the floor.

 

Located on the second floor in the library are the following:

  • Circulation area and front desk
  • A digital copier/printer/scanner and a CSVT Terminal (use the CSVT Terminal to place money on your MSOE ID card). Copying is free with an MSOE ID card, and printing and scanning are also free.
  • The Reference section
  • The lounge area for paperback books, current newspapers, popular magazines, entertainment DVDs, library exhibits and new book displays
  • All new study chairs (task chairs on wheels), and all new study tables (a variety of collaboration tables on wheels).
  • The food and beverage vending machine café
  • Eight laptop machines
    • The Library is an Open Computer Lab
    • Laptops feature Internet access
    • Laptops feature access to the MSOE network
    • Networked printer and copier is available
  • Study Rooms and Collaboration Rooms
    • Study rooms and collaboration rooms may be reserved for group study sessions. Please visit the front desk to reserve a room.  Rooms must be reserved at least 24 hours in advance.
    • Study rooms and collaboration rooms are networked
    • Collaboration rooms have a large conference table (seating for 8), and two large-screen digital display panels. Panels are wireless-enabled, and will enable students to display their laptops on the screen. Each screen can display (in four quadrants) the laptop displays of four students – eight displays per room.
  • Section A through Z of the book collection is located on this floor; this is the entire circulating book collection
    • LC classification system (alphanumeric call numbers)
    • LC subject headings (controlled vocabulary)
      • For example, "integrated circuits," not "computer chips"
    • Approximately, 50,000 book volumes.
      • More than one-half of the book collection is devoted to engineering, mathematics, physics, and chemistry
  • Two computers set up to search the Library Catalog
