ASTM Standards in Building Codes

  • The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) is one of the largest voluntary standards development organizations in the world. It annually publishes more than 10,000 standards in a variety of areas, including building and construction.
  • A print copy of the 1997 ASTM Standards in Building Codes is available in the lower level of the library. The call number is: REF TA 404.5 .A45 1997.
  • The ASTM Standards in Building Codes features standards in the following subject areas: acoustical materials; adhesives; aggregates; aluminum; asbestos-cement products; appearance; bituminous materials; brick; building constructions; carbon; cement; ceramics; clay pipe and tile; concrete and concrete aggregates; copper and copper alloys; electrical conductors; electrical insulating materials; exposure; industrial fabrics; fences; fire tests; floor coverings; geotextiles; glass; gypsum and plaster; iron castings; masonry products; natural building stone; paint; pavement surfaces; plastics; roofing; security; soil and rock; steel; thermal insulating materials; water; and wood.

NFPA Codes Online

  • NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) International is a not-for-profit organization that seeks to "reduce the worldwide burden of fire and other hazards on the quality of life by developing and advocating scientifically based consensus codes and standards, research, training, and education.
  • The NFPA Codes Database provides access to current NFPA Codes 1 through 9999, Archive Codes 1 through 9999, the NFC Online Glossary, and the NFC Online Master Index.
  • The Library will download codes upon request.
  • Important codes produced by the NFPA include the following:
NFPA 1, Fire Prevention Code Provides the requirements necessary to establish a reasonable level of fire safety and property protection in new and existing buildings.
NFPA 54, National Fuel Gas Code The safety benchmark for fuel gas installations.
NFPA 70, National Electrical Code The world's most widely used and accepted code for electrical installations.
NFPA 101, Life Safety Code Establishes minimum requirements for new and existing buildings to protect building occupants from fire, smoke, and toxic fumes.
NFPA 5000, Building Construction and Safety Code The first building code developed through an open, consensus-based process that is accredited by ANSI.


ASCE Standard 7-10

  • The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is an important professional organization in the fields of architectural engineering and construction management. It produces standards, research, and additional kinds of useful literature.
  • ASCE 7-10 is a standard entitled, Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures
  • An electronic version of this standard is available only via the MSOE network. You must have a user account on the domain to access this database. Log into the network. Click on Add/Remove Programs, then click on Add New programs. Select this resource and add it.
  • This resource must be viewed with the Adobe Acrobat Reader.
