MSOE honors graduates at Fall 2003 Commencement

Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) will celebrate its Fall 2003 Commencement 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003, at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts. Faculty and staff in colorful academic garb will process and 78 students will walk across the stage to receive their bachelor's and master's degrees during the university's 100th anniversary.

Class Respondent will be Joshua Robert Mikels, of Port Edwards, Wis., who will receive a B.S. Architectural Engineering and is graduating with High Honors.

Keynote speaker will be Frederick Stratton Jr., retired chairman, president and CEO of Briggs & Stratton Corp. Stratton, who has the university his guidance as an MSOE Corporation member for 24 years, will accept an Honorary Doctor of Engineering degree from MSOE at the ceremony.

Stratton served in senior executive and managerial positions at Briggs & Stratton Corp. for 28 years before becoming a chairman emeritus of the company in January 2003. The company was co-founded by his grandfather in 1908.

He earned a bachelor's degree in industrial administration from Yale University in 1961 and an MBA from Stanford University in 1963. He is a director of Bank One Corp., Elkhart Lake's Road America, Weyco Group Inc., Wisconsin Energy Corp., Midwest Airlines Holdings, United Performing Arts Fund, Greater Milwaukee Foundation and Milwaukee Redevelopment Corp., and is a member of the Taliesin Preservation Commission, Board of Overseers of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and the Senior Advisory Committee for Engineering at Yale University. He also has served as a trustee for the Metro Milwaukee Association of Commerce Scholarship Fund and director of the Youth Leadership Academy Branch of the YMCA.

Founded in 1903, MSOE is celebrating its first 100 years.

MSOE is an independent university with about 2,600 students. MSOE offers 16 bachelor's degrees in areas such as engineering, nursing, business, management information systems, technical communication, engineering technology and construction management. Graduate study includes engineering, engineering management, environmental engineering, structural engineering, medical informatics and perfusion.
