The MSOE men's soccer team earned plenty of respect this season as Jimmy Banks was named the Lake Michigan Conference Coach of the Year and 14 players won conference honors after the LMC announced its 2003 award winners this week.
Banks led the Raiders to a 10-7-1 (3-3 LMC) regular season record before falling in the tournament semifinals to eventual-champion Concordia. The former U.S. National Team player also won the coaching award in 2001, his third season with the squad.
"I'm pleased with the effort we put out through the season," Banks said. "We had some ups and downs, but looking back, we had some great highlights. I'm optimistic about the future of this team as all 22 players will be returning next year."
Representing the Raiders on the LMC All-Conference team were junior midfielder Greg Michalak (Brookfield, Wis.), freshman midfielder Ben Herrmann (Sycamore, Ill.), freshman defender Kevin Grob (Kenosha, Wis.) and freshman forwards Nick Hammel (Brookfield, Wis.) and Kou Xiong (Milwaukee, Wis.).
Herrmann, Hammel, Grob and Xiong also were recognized to the All-Rookie team and were joined by five other freshmen teammates: defenders Patrick Goodale (Gurnee, Ill.), Kevin McClory (Gurnee, Ill.) and Michael Brink (Aurora, Ill.), and midfielders Bob Klauck (Park Ridge, Ill.) and John Trongard (Pewaukee, Wis.).
Concordia won the regular-season and tournament championships; Lakeland won the other top awards as Carmelo Teran took Player of the Year honors and Scott Kress won Rookie of the Year.
