An exhibit highlighting Milwaukee School of Engineering’s 100-year history is now on view at the Milwaukee County Historical Society (910 N. Old World Third St.) and will run through Feb. 1, 2004.

Titled “A New School in a New Century,” the exhibit looks at MSOE’s German founding family, the Werwaths; Milwaukee’s first radio station, WSOE, which was located at MSOE; the school’s participation in the 1934 Chicago World’s Fair; and a remote-controlled flying zeppelin dating to 1911. Also included is a display of mechanical computing equipment, including a rare cylindrical slide rule and a circular slide rule.

Kent Peterson, MSOE’s Webmaster and co-chairman of a special history committee formed for the 2003 centennial, has spent two years delving into the university’s past and created several on-campus displays and a Web page that includes an extensive timeline, archival photos and facts.

“Our on-campus displays were well received by students and visitors, so I approached the Historical Society about reaching out to a wider audience,” said Peterson. “I think people who see the displays will be impressed with how the city of Milwaukee was on the cutting edge in industrial technology and leading the nation in education 100 years ago.”

Museum hours are: 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday; 1-5 p.m. Sunday. It is free and open to the public.
