Concrete canoe team takes 8th in nationals

A team of MSOE students finished 8th overall out of a field of 24 at the National Concrete Canoe Competition held in June in Philadelphia, a great showing for MSOE’s first bid in this event.
The 16th annual contest, sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), challenges knowledge, creativity and paddling prowess of students while showcasing the versatility of concrete as a building material.
MSOE’s team of 18 students, advised by Dr. Richard DeVries, made the trip to nationals after an exceptional showing at the regional competition. The national contest consisted of two days of academic presentations and judging and the final day was race day. MSOE’s design paper placed 5th and although the races were a tough endeavor for MSOE paddlers, students placed 10th in the endurance race. Congratulations!
