The Kiwanis Club of Milwaukee will present its annual Kiwanis Milwaukee Award to the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

This award has been presented for the past 21 years to honor an individual or organization whose actions have served as a significant source of pride for the entire Greater Milwaukee community. The award will be presented during a luncheon at noon Wednesday, June 18 at the Todd Wehr Conference Center at MSOE (1047 N. Broadway).

MSOE will receive the 2003 Kiwanis Milwaukee Award for its long history of superior educational performance and the benefits it has bestowed on the city of Milwaukee, as it celebrates its centennial year. MSOE Regent Chairman Robert Hillis, president and CEO of Direct Supply Inc, will accept the award.

In the award nomination, submitted by Kiwanis member Hugo E. Heyns III, the distinguished history of the college was noted: “From its inception, leaders of business and industry supported the university’s development and maintained a close relationship that has continued throughout its history. ... It still is an institution dedicated to education excellence, poised on the cutting edge of technology and positioned as a national and international leader among the world’s universities.”

MSOE President Hermann Viets expressed his deep appreciation for the Kiwanis honor. “In 1903, there was a great need for technically educated employees who could step into productive roles in industry,” he said. “Our young engineering school thrived, and now the university offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering, business, nursing and several specialty programs. The campus grew from a single, borrowed classroom to a dozen buildings in downtown Milwaukee. It offers programs in Wisconsin through outreach efforts and internationally through exchange programs. This award recognizes the efforts of many Regents, faculty, staff, students and alumni. Together we share our appreciation.”

MSOE recently broke ground for a state-of-the-art health, wellness and fitness facility, The Kern Center, and announced the acquisition of a collection of nearly 450 European and American paintings and sculptures that depict various forms of work.

Past winners of the Kiwanis Milwaukee award include the Milwaukee Brewers, Michael J. Cudahy, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Herb Kohl, Ben Barkin, Harley-Davidson, World Festivals, Inc., Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Pettit National Ice Center, Esperanza Unida, Frank Zeidler, Midwest Express Airlines, 440th Airlift Wing, Future Milwaukee, Jon McGlocklin, John Stollenwerk and Nancy Zimpher.

Kiwanis Club of Milwaukee, one of the oldest and most prestigious service clubs in the county, was founded in 1916, one year after the original club. Among its service projects are the Kiwanis River Cleanup, Curative Care Network and Holton Youth Center activities, Armed Forces Day luncheon, Salvation Army bell ringing and mentoring at Alexander Mitchell School. Kiwanis International has clubs in more than 80 countries, providing service projects to help their communities, particularly young children.

MSOE is an independent university with about 2,600 students. It offers 16 bachelor’s degrees in areas such as engineering, nursing, business, management information systems, technical communication, engineering technology and construction management. Graduate study includes engineering, engineering management, environmental engineering, structural engineering, medical informatics and perfusion.
