Two teams of undergraduate students from Milwaukee School of Engineering’s (MSOE) construction management program both took second in the National Construction Management Student Competition held April 2-5 in Dallas. Both MSOE teams had placed first in the regional competitions last November. The students are enrolled in MSOE’s B.S. in construction management and B.S. in architectural engineering programs. The performances speak volumes to MSOE’s national reputation as a major educational force in those programs.
The competition was sponsored by Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America and the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC).
Design Build Competition
For the Design Build
Competition, the six-person MSOE team prepared and presented an
architectural design, construction estimate, schedule, and mechanical
design to for a $50 million proposed agricultural research facility.
Two "all-nighters" were required, which also tested the student's
endurance.
MSOE competed against other regional winners including University of Florida, University of Oklahoma, University of Washington, Iowa State University, Brigham Young University and Penn College of Technology.
McCarthy Builders sponsored the competition. One of the judges, Steven Jennemann of McCarthy, called the MSOE students “pros that could step right into our firm.”
Commercial Construction Competition
The second MSOE
team, a six-person Commercial Construction group, prepared a
construction estimate, construction schedule, and construction plan-all
that encompassed a formal written proposal and oral presentation for a
proposed $24 million middle school project.
MSOE competed against six other teams from Clarkson University, Virginia Technological University, University of Oklahoma, Northern Arizona University, University of Washington and Iowa State University.
This competition was sponsored and judged by Turner Construction. The Turner judges emphasized that the MSOE team was polished, knowledgeable and worked well as a team.
Each member was awarded a plaque and the MSOE Architectural Engineering and Building Construction Department received two $1,500 checks for the Construction Management program.
This is the fourth straight year that MSOE fielded at least one team in the national championships. It is the first time both teams placed in the national championships - a feat that had not been achieved by any university before.
Funding from the AGC of Greater Milwaukee allowed the teams and coaches to attend this event, which was held in conjunction with AGC’s national convention. MSOE offers a B.S. degree in Construction Management (often double-majored with the B.S. in Architectural Engineering) and a Master of Science in Structural Engineering.
