MSOE’s student gaming club, MAGE, is hosting the third annual Concinnity 2003 science fiction and gaming show Saturday and Sunday, April 12 (8 a.m.-11 p.m.) and 13 (8 a.m.-6 p.m.) at MSOE’s Student Life and Campus Center, 1025 N. Broadway. The public event will include fan panels, autograph sessions, movie events, and gaming from video to miniatures. Admission is $10 per day /$19 for both days for adults and $8 per day/$15 for both days to children 12 or younger.
The growing interest in this event is indicative of the increasing popularity of science fiction and gaming, an $11 billion industry in the United States last year.
This year’s Concinnity featured guests will include Virginia Hey, the actress from the TV series Farscape, and lectures by Donald R. Schmitt, UFO expert and author.
Virginia Hey has played Zaahn, a blue alien priestess, for three years on the award-winning Farscape series shown on the Sci-Fi Channel in the United States and other networks worldwide. A native of Australia, Hey also has appeared in the film classic Mad Max 2: Road Warrior, Signal One and the James Bond movie The Living Daylights. She’ll lead two question-and-answer sessions and a meditation session.
Donald Schmitt is the former co-director of the J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies, and co-author of two best-selling books on the purported UFO events at Roswell, N.M., in 1947. The film, Roswell, based on his first book, was nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Picture category. He’ll lead two discussions on Roswell at the Concinnity show.
Other programs will cover topics such as: “The Clannish Feud” and “How are Klingons Alien,” both presented by I.K.V. Duras; “Designing and Marketing Star Wars” presented by Eric Larson; “Has the Star Trek Franchise Jumped the Shark” presented by Star Fleet Academy; and “Why Shows Like Farscape, Firefly and Odyssey 5 are Cancelled,” led by Kyym Kimple.
Founded in 1903, MSOE is celebrating its first 100 years.
