Wrestlers take first and second in NCAA regional wrestling tournament

Wrestler Matt Schoenherr (Tomahawk, Wis.) won the 285-pound weight class championship of the NCAA Division III regional wrestling tournament and 197-pounder Matt Huset (Ridgeland, Wis.) was runner-up. They both move on the NCAA national tournament March 7 and 8 in Ada, Ohio.
Schoenherr received a first round bye and pinned his quarterfinal opponent from Augustana College in 40 seconds. He then defeated his opponent from Concordia-Minnesota with a 3-1 score. Schoenherr’s championship match pitted him against Mike Flannigan of Augsburg College, a returning All-American ranked number five in the nation. Schoenherr won the match by the score of 2-1 in double overtime. Schoenherr has a 28-win, 5-loss record.
Huset defeated his first opponent from Wheaton College with a score of 3-1, his quarterfinal opponent from Concordia-Wisconsin with a 12-1 score, and his Augsburg College opponent with a 5-4 score. Huset’s championship match against a wrestler from St. John’s University of Minnesota was a heartbreaker and was defeated 2-1 in double overtime. His record now stands at 38 wins and 4 losses.
Teammate Jonathan Wrobel (Cudahy, Wis.) also won his first match at the regionals as he recorded a pin in 2:47 and 174-pound Jared Amann recorded a 10-4 win in a consolation match against his Concordia-Minnesota opponent. Aaron Gudeyon (133 pounds), Bryant Johnson (149 pounds), Jerry Blahut (157 pounds) and Greg Snow (165 pounds) also represented the Raiders at the regional tournament, where MSOE finished 12th among 16 teams.
Founded in 1903, MSOE is celebrating its first 100 years.
MSOE is an independent university with about 2,600 students. MSOE offers 16 bachelor’s degrees in areas such as engineering, nursing, business, management information systems, technical communication, engineering technology and construction management. Graduate study includes engineering, engineering management, environmental engineering, structural engineering, medical informatics and perfusion. MSOE is home to 18 teams in men’s and women’s intercollegiate sports, competing in NCAA Division III.
