Alton Wimer
MSOE offers more than 100 student clubs and orgs, allowing every student to find their niche on campus and connect with like-minded individuals. Alton Wimer, software engineering student, found his fit on the MSOE Esports team.
MSOE Esports currently has 14 teams across five titles: Valorant, Rocket League, Overwatch 2, Smash and FGC, and League of Legends. The teams are part of the Wisconsin Esports Conference and ECAC and are three-time national champions! Wimer plays on the Rocket League team.
Wimer enjoys combining video games with his competitive side. “I love the video game Rocket League, and I have always been super competitive, so I always wanted to be a part of a team and a league.”
Just as with traditional sports, Esports requires players to perfect their individual skillsets as well as work with the team to ensure they work together to beat their opponents. Growing together and bonding with a team is what it’s all about. “My favorite part about Esports is the people I’ve met. I have made some lifelong friendships through Esports.”
Wimer encourages anyone to join Esports, regardless of their skillsets. “You don’t have to be the best player—there are Esports for all kinds of players. You can be a lower-level player and still be a part of a team and experience the competitive aspects of Esports. If you are interested in gaming and are competitive, or if you just want to meet people who also have common interests as you, you should join Esports.”
Beyond Esports, Wimer enjoys making connections with others in the classroom. “The teachers and class sizes at MSOE really give that personal connection with everyone. Whenever I need help, I know I can get it.”
Over the summer of 2024, Wimer applied the software engineering knowledge he gained at MSOE to his internship at Church Mutual Insurance Company, S.I. Here he served as the IT application developer intern. For summer 2025, he accepted a software developer internship at Progressive Insurance. He is grateful to the Career Connections Center for supporting him on his job search.
“The Career Connections Center really helps a lot for when it comes to getting internships and full-time jobs. They have helped me get two internships.”
