Mayo Clinic researchers Andrew P. Norgan, M.D., Ph.D. and Panagiotis Korfiatis, Ph.D. will present their talk, “Artificial Intelligence in Medical Imaging: Current State and Future Directions,” at MSOE on Oct. 22, 4–6 p.m. in Diercks Hall in the NVIDIA Auditorium.

This talk will explore the evolving digitization of pathology and its pivotal role in advancing healthcare. They will delve into current applications of artificial intelligence in radiology and digital pathology, highlighting how these technologies are enhancing diagnostic accuracy and efficiency, while also addressing potential pitfalls such as over-reliance on AI, data privacy concerns, and the challenges of integrating these systems into clinical workflows. Additionally, the discussion will cover emerging uses of foundation models and large language models (LLMs) in medical imaging, showcasing their potential to further revolutionize the field.

Dr. Dwight Diercks ’90 will also be in attendance to kick off the Rosie Supercomputer Super Challenge! In addition to the talk, there will be office hours to meet the speakers from 1:30–3:30 p.m. in Diercks Hall, DH-443.

Dr. Andrew Norgan is an assistant professor of laboratory medicine and pathology in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Norgan has subspecialty interests in perinatal, autopsy and infectious diseases pathology, and is an associate director of the Clinical Microbiology Molecular Laboratory where he focuses on metagenomic sequencing bioinformatics. In addition, Norgan leads digital pathology-, cloud-, and AI/ML-related innovation efforts in his role as medical director of Digital Pathology Platform and serves as the associate pathology residency program director for informatics.

Dr. Panagiotis Korfiatis is an assistant professor of radiology in the Department of Radiology at Mayo Clinic, where he aims to seamlessly incorporate AI algorithms into clinical workflows. This involves emphasizing the importance of effective monitoring and optimization of these systems in live settings. His research studies also extend to harnessing cutting-edge technologies, such as multimodal large language models, to assist clinicians in their daily workflows. Korfiatis’ AI research significantly transforms patient care, making it easier for clinicians to give correct diagnoses, personalize treatments and streamline workflows.
