Overview

The Humanities, Social Science, and Communication Department offers a nine-day trip to Munich for an incomparable artistic and cultural experience. The trip is an experiential component of a 3-credit art history course offered at MSOE.

Key Features:

• The program is open to all majors.
• Students earn three elective humanities credits toward graduation.
• The course is offered during the Winter Quarter and the tour is conducted over Christmas break (typically Dec. 26 to Jan. 3)
• Trip cost is about $2,000 (airfare, accommodations at youth hostel and breakfast daily).
• The course and the tour are limited to 25 students

The Course

The Munich Art History Tour is conducted as a course requirement for a special section of HU-4841 German Art History, which is open to students of all majors. The course is offered during the Winter Quarter and focuses on German art history since the Renaissance. Two-thirds of the class sessions take place on campus, beginning in MSOE’s own Grohmann Museum, which has many excellent examples of German art. The remaining classes take place in Munich, where students will be immersed in the art they studied.

The Tour

While in Munich, students will visit the following art museums:

• Alte Pinakothek (Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque art)
• Neue Pinakothek (19^th century and early 20^th century art)
• Pinakothek der Moderne (modern art of the 20^th and 21^st centuries)
• Lenbachhaus (German landscapes and German Expressionist works)

Additionally, students will visit several churches and palaces that exemplify the world’s finest Baroque art and architecture:

• Theatinerkirche (St. Cajetan Church)
• Asamkirche (St. Johann Nepomuk Church)
• Nymphenburg Palace (summer residence of the Wittelsbach kings)

Students will also have time to visit other sites of their choice, including:

• Residenz Palace
• Deutsches Museum
• Frauenkirche (Munich cathedral)
• Neues Rathaus (New City Hall) and the Glockenspiel, Marienplatz
• Feldherrnhalle, Odeonsplatz

Accommodations and Transportation

MSOE faculty will accompany the student group to Munich and conduct tours of all museums and other sites. The group will travel via mass transit, which includes trains, subways, streetcars and buses. While in Munich, students will stay in a youth hostel with their MSOE peers and accompanying faculty. Rooms vary in size, allowing occupancies of four to eight. Students are asked to bring $200 to cover the cost of transportation, entry fees for the various museums, additional meals beyond the breakfast meal, and any other expenses. American dollars can be exchanged for Euros at various locations, and most debit cards can be used in German ATMs.
