At MSOE, Charlene discovered more than just a classroom; she found a supportive community. A junior majoring in industrial engineering, Charlene recognized the value of MSOE’s intimate setting even before becoming a student. which has allowed for close connections with faculty and staff, shaping her academic journey and personal growth. “I chose MSOE because of the small classes and the ability to get to know the professors better without having teacher assistants,” she said.
Charlene’s industrial engineering advisor has been a constant source of support, offering guidance on both academic challenges and life advice during office hours. “She helped me to realize that grades don’t truly determine our intelligence, and I should be less harsh on myself and give myself some lenience to create mistakes.”
Beyond the classroom, Charlene has thrived in her supportive campus community. As treasurer of the Asian American Student Union for the past three years, she has built a strong sense of community and lifelong friendships. “With this organization, I found my place of belonging on campus where I feel welcome and appreciated for my Asian background,” she says. "To this day, I remain close friends with those that I’ve met through the organization because of their support.”
Charlene recognizes the significant impact of financial aid on her educational journey, with scholarships playing an important role in her success at MSOE. "It has lifted a financial burden from me, and I don’t have to worry about funding my education as I pursue my degree. I am forever grateful, and words can’t explain how much this means to me and my family.”
